Frequently Asked Questions
How do I commission a mosaic?
The first step would be to contact me and we can discuss what you are looking for. I like doing custom work and would be very interested in talking to you. I offer design, fabrication and installation of nearly any size mosaic, be inside, outside or hanging on your wall.
How much does a mosaic cost?
Well, if you looked at any of the prices that I have listed with the art on this site, you would see they are not inexpensive. There are many factors that go into the price of a mosaic. Some of these factors include: materials size of tile size of mosaic complexity of design installation or framing shipping could also be an important factor due to the size and weight factors
The most important determinants are complexity of design and size of tile. The more complex the design, the smaller the tiles need to be cut, the more my big fingers get in the way and the more likely it will be that I have to use tweezers to place each tile. (Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the tweezers) This means that the mosaic is more impressive and more expensive. On the other hand, if you want to fill a larger space with bigger tile and a less complex design it generally is less expensive.
How long does it take to make a mosaic?
Mosaics are very labor intensive, especially if I use small tiles and have to resort to using tweezers! As an example, I will use the mosaic of the two horses on the commissions page. This ungrouted mosaic with tiles in the size range of ¼" to 3/8" is roughly 8 square feet and took about 85 hours to complete including the welded steel frame that I made myself. On the other hand, the Eiffel Tower mosaic on the wall hangings page has larger tiles, a simple design with no frame (the edges are finished with dark thinset) and is almost 10 square feet. This mosaic was finished in about 18 hours.
I should also add, that if you read the "About the Artist" page you know that I am also a stay-at-home dad. That means that when I am not having fun with my 3 year old, I am making mosaics. So my overall lead times are often longer. (80 hours over 3-4 weeks for example)
Thank you for you interest. If you have any questions regarding my mosaics, how you can own one or to discuss a one-of-kind work of art, please feel free to contact me.
